The 91ÊÓƵSchool of Music is proud to announce that Will Kepa, the talented Torres Strait Islander musician leading the new Indigenous music recording studio - Yil Lull recording studio, has been awarded the 2024 ACT NAIDOC Week Community Spirit Award.  

This prestigious accolade recognizes Will's exceptional contributions to the Indigenous community through his dedication to nurturing and promoting Indigenous musical talent. 

Will Kepa has played a pivotal role in the establishment and operation of the Indigenous music recording studio at ANU, which launched earlier this year. The studio provides a state-of-the-art space for Indigenous artists to create and record music, fostering a vibrant and inclusive music community. 

 

Congratulations to the more than 2000 students graduating from 91ÊÓƵthis week. We have gathered a couple of stories from graduating students to showcase the brilliant minds and hard work of this graduating cohort.

Venturing to a remote village in Southwest China to learn an undocumented language at a local primary school would be daunting for most people, but not for PhD student Huade Huang, who graduates this week.  

With two Indigenous languages dying every month, learn why preserving these unique dialects is crucial. Read on to understand the cultural richness of the Kua’nsi language and what can be done to save it.

Graduating with a double degree in Law and Politics, Philosophy and Economics, Emma Campbell has made the most of her time at 91ÊÓƵCollege of Law. Throughout her degree Emma has enjoyed many practical learning opportunities with highly regarded legal clinics, which she describes as the highlights of her time at ANU.  

“Studying law is challenging but incredibly rewarding – you learn a lot, meet countless interesting people and discover a great deal about yourself,” say Emma.

Amp-up your lunchbreak with a free lunchtime jazz concert at the 91ÊÓƵSchool of Art and Design. Melt into harmonies as musicians from the Community Music Centre share their love of music making through a live jazz performance.

Mr John McCarthy AO will deliver the annual Commonwealth Lecture, named in honour of former 91ÊÓƵVice-Chancellor the late Professor Anthony Low AO. Mr McCarthy will discuss the tensions in Australian external policy deriving from the pursuit of hard economic and security interests and the propagation of universal values and western precepts of governance. 

 

Tuesday 16 July, 6-7pm 

Brigitta Olubas and Susan Wyndham will be in conversation with Julieanne Lamond on their new book Hazzard and Harrower. The Letters.  

Edited by Brigitta Olubas, Hazzard's official biographer, and Susan Wyndham, who interviewed both Hazzard and Harrower, this is an extraordinary account of two literary luminaries, their complex relationship and their times.

91ÊÓƵLibrary continues to focus on the inclusion of Indigenous Australian voices, perspectives and knowledge by ensuring materials by Indigenous authors and focused on Indigenous Knowledge are made more accessible through our collections. Recently, we launched an online hub to support educators to incorporate Indigenous collections into curriculum. 

 

In celebration of NAIDOC Week, People & Culture have reduced the price of the upcoming 6 August session of the university’s Indigenous Cultural Awareness Workshop from $350 to $280. Gain deeper insights into First Nations lived history and learn to recognise the impact of words and behaviour through sharing and learning of stories.

Do you have questions about your tax? The student-run 91ÊÓƵTax Clinic, supported by tax experts, provides free and confidential assistance to taxpayers without a tax agent. The 91ÊÓƵTax Clinic assists taxpayers in understanding their tax affairs and meeting their tax obligations. The clinic consults on a wide range of simple and complex matters.  

Appointments are available via phone, videoconferencing, or in person. 

 

The University is excited to announce our new learning management system (LMS), Canvas. This decision follows a rigorous consultation and procurement process, with input from stakeholders across the University. Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching) Geoff Hinchcliffe says, “In selecting Canvas as our preferred LMS, 91ÊÓƵjoins a long list of the world’s leading universities.” 

“The new LMS is another important piece in a wider program of educational renewal focused on ensuring that our university is keeping pace with global advancements in higher education and equipped to deliver the quality of education expected of Australia’s national university.” 

Our transition to Canvas will happen in stages over the next two years from 2024-2026.  

 

Exploring learning and teaching (ELT) offers a practice-based learning experience that introduces you to important aspects of learning and teaching in the higher education context. This program is ideal for anyone who is new to teaching or looking to consolidate their teaching practice. 

Enrol in an O-Week intensive or a weekly program beginning in semester 2.  

 

Facilitated by ABC Religion and Ethics Editor Scott Stephens, this interactive workshop will teach academics to successfully project their research to the broader public and will bolster writing skills. Learn media techniques to connect with your audience and explore the history and value of media.

The Extenuating Circumstances Application (ECA) eForm will be decommissioned in July 2024 and replaced with a new Microsoft Power App. The new ‘Request for Assessment Adjustment’ Power App will be the place where you can request an assessment extension or an ECA. Any eForms that have already been lodged will remain in the system until they are resolved.
