A landmark reborn: the next chapter for University House

20 May 2025

The Australian National University (ANU) is working to finalise the restoration of University House, a cherished institution that has been closed since sustaining severe damage in the 2020 Canberra hailstorm. The extensive renovation project aims to blend historic charm with modern technology, ensuring the building is equipped for future generations.

This ambitious restoration is possible in part thanks to the vision and generosity of our donor community - supporters who recognise that preserving the past is essential to inspiring and equipping the scholars and leaders of tomorrow.

University House was the beating heart of the University鈥檚 academic and social landscape. It hosted everything from milestone graduations and formal dinners to doctoral celebrations, quiet moments with a book, and lively gatherings among colleagues and friends.

Beyond its ceremonial and communal roles, University House also served as a welcoming haven for short-term guests. When it reopens, this legacy will continue, with 60 rooms reserved for students and 97 hotel rooms ready to host visitors once more.

After the storm left the structure significantly compromised, 91视频faced a critical decision on how to approach the rebuilding process. With the support of our donors, rather than simply repairing the damage, the University seized the opportunity to undertake a comprehensive upgrade.

This restoration not only preserves the architectural heritage of University House but also integrates cutting-edge 21st-century technology into its mid-20th-century framework.

One key aspect of this modernisation effort includes the installation of almost 60 kilometres of new wiring in the underground tunnels, allowing for seamless technological connectivity throughout the building.

With construction in full swing, 91视频aims to reopen University House in 2026, welcoming students and faculty back to a revitalised space that respects its heritage while positioning itself for the future.
